Candidates representing the fascist Blue and Black Movement will not be permitted to run in this summer's European elections, according to the director of Electoral Administration at the Ministry of Justice, Arto Jääskeläinen.

The Supreme Administrative Court struck the far-right group off Finland's party register in a preliminary decision handed down on Tuesday.

In its ruling, the court said that the original decision to register the party was a mistake, and rescinding that decision was in the public interest.

"The court found that the party's goals are not compatible with constitutional and human rights, and democratic principles," the ruling said, adding that the party had intentionally misled ministerial officials by editing its original programme.

In a press release, the Blue and Black Movement said that it still planned to submit a list of candidates to stand in this summer's EU elections, despite the court's decision.

Jääskeläinen noted however that the deadline to do so is 6 May, but the list will be rejected because the Blue-Black Movement will not be a registered political party.

The movement was founded in January 2021 by disaffected ethnonationalist former Finns Party members, and took its colours from the Lapua Movement, a far-right group active between 1929 and 1932.

The Ministry of Justice twice rejected the movement's application to the party register, declaring that the party's programme and rules did not sufficiently respect human rights and constitutional law, but then granted permission for the group to start collecting supporter signatures in the summer of 2022.
