The Centre Party and Movement Now have jointly submitted an interpellation question to parliament, accusing Petteri Orpo's (NCP) government of a disastrous economic policy.

The parties consider the three-billion-euro adjustment package agreed on by the government to be fitting in size, but criticised the government for its modest growth measures.

Markus Lohi of the Centre Party said at a press conference that Finland's public finances are in a sorry state and the people of Finland are not confident in the economy or in the future of companies.

"This is reflected in the fact that people do not dare to spend or invest in Finland," he said.

Parties call for real growth measures

According to the authors of the interpellation question, Finland needs a strong growth package.

"The government has put cuts on the table, but that should have been swiftly followed by a boost in investments," said Eeva Kalli of the Centre Party.

According to Kalli, growth measures for small and medium-sized enterprises are particularly lacking and the Centre Party is not convinced of the government's ability to solve the skills shortage.

"The government is presenting a panic package that lacks sufficient growth incentives," Kalli said.

Harry Harkimo of Movement Now looked to examples abroad. He said that Sweden, Germany and France are investing heavily in growth.

"We need to invest in growth. Otherwise this country will dry up," Harkimo said.

An interpellation question usually leads to a debate among MPs and a vote of confidence in the government.

The Centre Party and Movement Now also jointly tabled an interpellation question in March on the government's regional policy.

All five opposition parties, including the Left Alliance, the Social Democrats and the Green Party, previously filed an interpellation last week over the government's plans to cut hospital services.

The Left Alliance has also filed a confidence motion aimed at the Minister for Social Affairs and Health, Kaisa Juuso (Finns) over her role in the package of cuts announced last week.
