A Helsinki-bound Finnair flight from Chicago was diverted to New York on Sunday morning following a technical issue.

The plane had to shut down one of its engines some three hours into the flight. The aircraft touched down safely in New York at around 10am Finnish time.

The Airbus A330 aircraft was carrying 194 passengers and some ten crew members.

According to Finnair, the plane is capable of flying with one engine shut down, and landing procedures were conducted as usual. Passengers onboard have been rerouted or accommodated as needed, the Finnish flag carrier said.

In New York, the aircraft will undergo a technical inspection. The absence of one plane from Finnair's fleet is causing some changes and cancellations to other flights.
